A Compendium of Information on Alternative Onsite Septic System Technology in Massachusetts
In many other parts of the country, AOSS were introduced primarily to address the issue of poorly-percolating or otherwise limiting soil conditions as opposed to addressing the various nonpoint pollution issues of onsite septic system use. Accordingly, the focus of most of the demonstration projects in MA has been to demonstrate the reduction of both pathogens and nitrogen.   [6/2001]

A wastewater management plan
Albury, Australia - population = 42,000, has developed and is proceeding with an integrated wastewater treatment, water reclamation and reuse project. This the text of a paper delivered to a water management conference in Florida on 24 Oct 95 by the Manager, Design Services, Albury City Council.   [1/1998, 3/1998]

A wastewater treatment implementation approach
This outline presents the steps taken to develop and implement an effective in-house wastewater treatment system. A methodical approach will increase the chances that your wastewater treatment system will work as you intended. There is no substitute for testing and evaluation. You should understand how and why the treatment system works.   [1/1998, 3/1998]

ACS Environmental Science & Technology
ES&T reports on aspects of the environment and its protection by scientific, engineering, and political means. Although the numbers can vary, urine typically contributes around 80% of the nitrogen, 50% of the phosphorus, and 90% of the potassium in the total nutrient load arriving at a treatment plant. Absent urine, plant influent carbon and nitrogen levels would be almost balanced; that is, the plant's bacteria feeding on the organic matter in the wastewater could absorb all the nitrogen content.   [5/2001]

Chemical Precipitation -- Basics
Chemical precipitation is a method of wastewater treatment. Wastewater treatment chemicals are added to form particles which settle and remove contaminants. The treated water is then decanted and appropriately disposed of or reused. The resultant sludge can be dewatered to reduce volume and must be appropriately disposed of. Chemical precipitation can be used to remove metals, fats, oils and greases (FOG), suspended solids and some organics. It can also to be used to remove phosphorus, fluoride, ferrocyanide and other inorganics.   [1/1998]

In cities of the developing world, only a fraction of urban sewage is treated, even in cities in middle-income countries.
